Dr. Michael C.J. Cowpland
Mike began his career in 1964 at Bell Northern Research, working on electronic telephone systems, before moving to MicroSystems International where he was manager of silicon chip design. In 1973, he founded MITEL with Terrance Matthews and was the company's CEO for 10 years. During this time, MITEL achieved a 100 per cent annual growth rate. When MITEL was sold to British Telecom in 1984, its sales were more than $300 million. Attracted to the dynamic PC software market and eager for a new challenge, Mike founded Corel in 1985. Over the next 15 years, until 2000, he led Corel's growth into one of the world's top software companies, with 50 million users of Corel Draw and WordPerfect worldwide. In February 2001, Mike acquired a majority interest in ZIM Technologies and took over as President and CEO, bringing his experience and business savvy to the burgeoning wireless market. Mike earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering at Imperial College, Britain's leading engineering university. After moving to Ottawa in 1964, he received a Master's degree and a Doctorate in electrical engineering from Carleton University. He also holds several honorary degrees.
Richard Timmons
Carleton University alumni Richard Timmons brings 25 years of experience in technology, management and start-ups to CertainKey's advisory board. Founder of Sagus Security Inc. and DOMAS Software Ltd., Richard's first hand experience in high tech, security based start-ups help advise CertainKey's management in many curtail areas. Since departing his General Manager/Chief Scientific Office position at Sagus Security Inc. (acquired by CyberSafe Canada Inc. in December 1998), Richard has taken a new role as Entrepreneur in Resident at Ventures West.
